While the fully molded and insulated bowl seems like a good idea, the laws of thermodynamics win in the end and as soon as the heater element (lasts 1 to 2 years at best even when stored dry and unplugged during the non-heating season) quits there is nothing providing heat to your water bowl! The bowl itself is also insulated from any geothermal heat rise from below. If you live in a mild climate the bowl is well made and functional and stands up to the rigour of beef cattle, just not in mine (Manitoba). I have a thermocube installed with a heat bulb below for the inevitability of the element burning out. Still working great in 2006 when I bought a bigger stables for 28 horses that I installed three MiraFount 3465 units between six pastures. These geothermal waterers paid for themselves in less than 2 years by us not having to: heat 1,200 gallons of open water tanks through Michigan winters ,(and hauling out and draining hoses or heating a hydrant to do it;) dumping/washing/rinsing those open water tanks weekly and treating for mosquito larvae through the summer. Sappy, but true: I love my MiraFount waterers every time my eyes light on them. Even if the balls freeze with water dripped from drinking animals in the winter, they are fairly easily thumped or carefully chipped free. My only complaints are the balls on these newer waterers evidently no longer survive the heating and cooling process of the seasons to last more than 3-4 years, and the \"stick on\" rubber seal between the base and top of the new tanks (they did not have with the older tank,) comes off before the first time you replace the balls and requires a better fitting, wedged-in seal (bought somewhere else,) to stay in place for each subsequent ball replacement. Still...
